Quiet Clean Rhode Island

Quiet Clean RI is a volunteer group of Rhode Island residents that seeks to remove fossil fuels from landscape maintenance, beginning with the elimination of gas-powered leaf blowers in Rhode Island. We believe that taking care of our green spaces and outdoor areas need not put people's health and our environment at risk. Our goals are to: educate the public about the dangers of gas-powered landscaping tools; promote cleaner, quieter, healthier alternatives; advocate for legislation to accelerate the transition away from gas-powered landscape equipment.

Hot Zones: Urban Heat Islands

A research brief by Climate Central

Urban heat islands are metropolitan places that are hotter than their outlying areas, with the impacts felt most during summer months. About 85% of the U.S. population lives in metropolitan areas. Paved roads, parking lots, and buildings absorb and retain heat during the day and radiate that heat back into the surrounding air. Neighborhoods in a highly-developed city can experience mid-afternoon temperatures that are 15°F to 20°F hotter than nearby tree-lined communities or rural areas with fewer people and buildings.

Expanding Learning Opportunities Through Gardening

The Central Falls School District's Expanded Learning Community will provide more opportunities for Central Falls youth to spend time at the community garden learning about growing healthy food and nutrition, and to work with community artists to create a healthy foods cookbook for the foods they grow.

In addition, the students will help start a garden at the Calcutt Middle School.
